The largest health care provider in Johnson County, Kansas, the SMH network includes Shawnee Mission Medical Center, SMH – Overland Park and SMH – Prairie Star. The 54-acre campus at SMMC is comprised of the main hospital, a community health education building, six physician office buildings and an associate child care center. The Emergency Department at SMMC is the busiest in Johnson County. We deliver more babies each year at the Shawnee Mission Birth Center than any other hospital in the metropolitan area and our Center for Women’s Health is nationally recognized. We have 10 Shawnee Mission Primary Care locations with more than 70 Board-certified doctors who specialize in family medicine, internal medicine and pediatrics as well as Centra Care Shawnee Mission Urgent Care and Spira Care locations.

You will be responsible for: 

  • The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS)/Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) is founded upon the role of the Registered Nurse (RN) and the nursing process competencies of Assessment, Nursing Diagnosis, Outcome Identification, Planning, Implementation and Evaluation.  The CNS/APN role is founded on the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists organizational framework and competencies.
  • Uses clinical expertise, critical thinking skills, collaboration, systems thinking, research and transformational leadership to positively impact the outcomes of patient populations.
  • Serves as consultant, collaborator, educator, researcher, innovator and coach to facilitate patient care outcomes, process improvement initiatives and staff development.  Incumbents influence may extend across the unit, department, facility, community, organizational, and national levels to contribute to outcomes and extending the body of nursing knowledge.

What Will You Need?

  • Master’s Degree in Nursing
  • Evidence of clinical expertise in a patient care setting or specialty practice
  • Evidence of project management and/or process improvement
  • Evidence of transformational leadership in implementation of evidence based practice
  • BCLS obtained through the American Heart Association Preferred
  • Kansas Registered Nurse License
  • Basic computer skills in Office, Word and Excel
