Chief Medical Officer, PHSO - AdventHealth

We are currently seeking qualified candidates for a Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Population Health Services Organization (PHSO) position located in Maitland, Florida.

As a faith-based organization, it is the intention of AdventHealth to identify and employ executive leaders who are professionally competent and who provide leadership that is consistent with our mission. It is required that the candidate serve the mission of Extending the Healing Ministry of Christ and demonstrate proficiency in the AdventHealth executive leadership competencies.


The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) will lead the development of Population Health Management (PHM) clinical capability within the Population Health Services Organization (PHSO). CMO will be primarily responsible for guiding and assisting the various networks and clinical delivery systems across the various regions of AdventHealth to adopt new behaviors, structures and reimbursement methods consistent with Population Health Management. CMO works collaboratively with various hospital, physician, payor, government and community individuals to identify opportunities to reduce the cost of healthcare, improve quality outcomes and the overall health of the community while creating a better patient experience. CMO works in conjunction with the Clinical Integration team, the hospital system, independent physicians and others for members that AdventHealth is at financial risk for through value based care arrangements, direct-to-employer opportunities, government programs, etc. to unify the entire spectrum of health system interventions from prevention and promotion to diagnosis, treatment and care. Additionally, the CMO ensures compliance of all applicable local, state and federal agencies and regulatory bodies.



•    Lead the development and adoption of cost-effective clinical protocols for high cost/high utilization conditions across AdventHealth.

•    Assist the provider system in developing programs to reduce inpatient utilization and avoid readmissions.

•    Ensure through direct authority or influence the development of effective quality management/oversight systems for the PHSO.

•    Analyze performance reports and data to improve decisions making, process and program implementation.

•    Assist in the formulation of healthcare service utilization and cost forecasts for selected patient populations.

•    Identify/assist in the development of provider system-based disease management programs.

•    Use expertise to identify and act upon the board range of factors and conditions that have a strong influence on health in order to reduce health inequalities among population groups.


Payment Reform

•    Assist the provider system in accepting new forms of reimbursement from internal and external payors.

•    Assist in the preparation of financial analyses of new reimbursement methods or proposals.

•    Assist in the selection, deployment and development of data/decision support tools and services necessary for managing healthcare risk.

•    Ensure that any at-risk contracts that are negotiated are medically sound and identifies any concerns in advance of signature.


Physician Leadership/Network Management

•    Assist AdventHealth Executive Leadership in setting and articulating the population health management vision, as well as gaining commitment of internal and external providers.

•    Provide medical leadership to the Network Operations leader and department and assist in development of the overall provider network strategy.

•    Work collaboratively with the various region/division Clinically Integrated Networks (CINs) physician leaders to ensure support from the PHSO as needed and that programs/strategies being presented to the CINs are based on medically sound best practice.

•    Function as a liaison for clinical issues between network providers and the administrative arms of the organization, including internal payors, partners and any external payors with relationships mediated through the PHSO.

•    Serve as a “connector” between various elements of AdventHealth in mediating, negotiating and coordinating optimal division-wide outcomes within scope of responsibility.

•    Maintain communication and interacts with stakeholders, leaders and clinical staff (employed and independent) to update on the PHSO’s efforts to include financial and quality aspects of contract performance, care coordination, clinical documentation improvement, physician engagement and network performance.

•    Responsible for the strategy and execution of the AdventHealth ACO including acting as chairman of the board and as its Medical Director


•    Preside over or serve on management committees, steering committees, task forces, or other governing boards as required.

•    Prepare and present results of major responsibilities to the executive leadership, PHSO President, other AdventHealth Florida Division executives as required.

•    Participate in strategic planning and the annual budget process.

•    Other duties as assigned by PHSO President.

•    M.D. / D.O. degree from an accredited program

•    Current unrestricted medical license

•    10 years of medical practice experience

•  8 years of experience in healthcare leadership, preferably at a managed care organization, integrated delivery system or multispecialty group practice

•         Experience preferred:

o   Design and implementation of clinical protocols and utilization management/quality assurance programs

o   Design and implementation of provider reimbursement systems supportive of Population Health Management (for example DRG, APC, APC, or ETG-based reimbursement, capitation, bundled payment, performance-based reimbursement).

o   Network management from a payor and/or integrated payor/provider standpoint.
