Decedent Care Coordinator – Security – Orlando

Orlando seeks to hire Decedent Care Coordinator who will embrace our mission to extend the healing ministry of Christ.

Department Profile:

The Florida Hospital System Security Department consists of 5 Divisions: Technology, Training, Communications, Investigations, and Security Force Operations. While the System Security Division is located on the Orlando campus, the scope of services provided, and oversight of operations extends to all business entities located in the Florida Hospital Central Market.

Job Summary:

Under limited supervision, the Decedent Care Coordinator is responsible for the disposition of all matters of decedent care services for deceased patients and families. Performs a variety of duties to assist families and staff regarding the disposition of all matters of decedent care. Provides guidance and support to patients, families and healthcare teams. Assists patients and their families with inquiries regarding death certificate process, autopsies, and other end-of-life and postmortem care inquires. Ensures that all areas of decedent care are administered with dignity, compassion, confidentiality, efficiency, and the utmost respect. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

Knowledge, Skills, Education, & Experience Required:

  • Associate degree in Mortuary Science, Nursing, Social Work, or another field directly applicable to decedent care; AND
  • Two years of experience in clinical field, clinical social work, mortuary science, or another field directly applicable to decedent care; OR
  • An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience
  • Good verbal and written communication skills and working knowledge of English grammar and spelling
  • Organized, self-motivated, adaptable, detail oriented, and able to work under heightened emotional situations and sensitive conditions
  • Strong interpersonal and advocacy skills
  • Good technical computer knowledge and skills including Windows, Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint
  • Basic mortuary science and communications principles / best practices related to decedent care field
  • Understanding of decedent care processes and ability to solve problems and think critically
  • Ability to work around decedents and stressful and emotional conditions
  • Commitment to improve care for patients nearing end-of-life and for their loved ones
  • Ability to use appropriate body lift equipment, hydraulic tables and carts
  • Ability to move deceased patients using mortuary equipment and / or other employees that assist in the lift process
  • Ability to engage in active work requiring moderate physical exertion and manual dexterity in handling bodies and equipment

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Required:

  • Valid Class “E” Florida Driver’s license and driving record in accordance with Florida Hospital policy
  • Body Removal Service License as established in 497.385, Florida Statutes and rule 69K-24-021, Florida Administrative Code (Preferred)
  • Valid Florida Funeral Director License or Registered Nurse License (Preferred)

Job Responsibilities:

Demonstrates through behavior Florida Hospital’s Core Values of Integrity, Compassion, Balance, Excellence, Stewardship and Teamwork as outlined in the organization’s Performance Excellence Program

  • Screens all deaths for medical examiner’s jurisdiction in compliance with state laws. Ensures completion of all appropriate decedent care paperwork (i.e. all forms, documents, and authorizations) in compliance with state and federal laws. Continuously work to understand changes to state and federal compliance laws. Maintains decedent care records.
  • Communicates with deceased patients’ Legally Authorized Person (LAP) when necessary and assists in completing all necessary paperwork and other related tasks.
  • Transports deceased patients to the morgue and secures belongings. Stores and maintains decedents in cooler.
  • Coordinates and conducts release of deceased patients to authorized funeral home, direct cremation entities, and body removal service providers.
  • Acts as liaison with clinicians, hospital services, pathology personnel, deceased patient’s family, cremation services, funeral homes, Medical Examiner’s Office and other government agencies to expedite paperwork processing, bed-turnover and release of decedent from the hospital. Refers applicable cases to the appropriate county’s indigent burial program and conducts routine follow-up.
  • Develops and organizes end-of-life related programs, in collaboration with other hospital services and units, and the execution of such programs and procedures related to decedent care. Assists in planning for development of decedent care related affairs.
  • Files death certificate to Office of Vital Statistics by day five if the decedent has not been released from the hospital for final disposition.
  • Ensures physical environment of the morgue cooler, entry waiting, and locker storage areas remain clean and are maintained in accordance with hospital standards. This responsibility includes performing containment of bio-hazard fluids in occupied body trays. Solicits assistance from Pathology department personnel to carry out these duties when necessary.
  • Oversees contracts and service agreements with third party providers for transportation and storage of deceased patients in the care of Florida Hospital.
